Minding Your Thoughts

A Biblical Overview of Obtaining and Maintaining a Biblical Thought Life

Titus 2:6 Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded.

Strongs Concordance defines the term “sober minded” as:

1) To be of sound mind

1a) to be in one’s right mind

            1b) to exercise self-control

1b1) to put a moderate estimate upon one’s self, think of one’s

self soberly

                        1b2) to curb one’s passions

According to Paul’s Holy Spirit inspired instruction to Titus (a Gentile co-worker with Paul and early church leader, missionary and pastor) pastors are to exhort young men to be “sober minded.” (See Titus 2:2-5)  It has already been established in these devotions that which is begun in the mind finds outlets through actions. Young men then, being “sober minded” will bring about sober actions.

Paul’s instructions are not only reserved for young men, he also gives instruction to aged men, aged women and young women. He uses the word sober while addressing the aged men and young women, and alludes to it by saying “likewise” to the aged women. Therefore, all groups of adults, whether young or old are to be “sober minded.”

In all things mental, strive to be “sober minded;” be of a sound mind, a right mind, a mind that is self-controlled.  The dividends reaped from such a noble pursuit are propriety and prosperity of which none would ever be ashamed. Know this also, shame hunts for the otherwise minded.  Therein is a topic for a devotion for another day.

May the Lord bless and be pleased with your thought life today.

Dr. William Howe
