Minding Your Thoughts

A Biblical Overview of Obtaining and Maintaining a Biblical Thought Life

Matthew 1:19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.

But he didn’t. The angel of the Lord appeared to him giving instructions about what to do, Joseph obeyed the angel. So it goes. Many times that which we are minded to do is not that which we should do.

King David was minded to build a house for the Lord. He relayed this heart’s desire to Nathan the prophet. The man of God told David: …Go, do all that is in thine heart; for the LORD is with thee. (II Samuel 7:3) However, that night the Word of the Lord came to Nathan telling him to relay a message to the King. The message was that David was not to build the house of God, that task was to be the responsibility of Solomon, David’s son. David was minded to do something big for God, but God vetoed his desire.

The lesson here is that sometimes we are minded to do something but upon further review, prayer, Bible reading, and circumstances God says no. One of the distinctions between a mature believer in Christ and a babe in Christ is how they react to being told no. Just because one is minded to do something doesn’t mean they should do it. Joseph didn’t, David didn’t, and sometimes we shouldn’t.

May the Lord bless and be pleased with your thought life today.

Dr. William Howe
