Minding Your Thoughts

A Biblical Overview of Obtaining and Maintaining a Biblical Thought Life

II Chronicles 24:4 And it came to pass after this, that Joash was minded to repair the house of the LORD.

So he did.  The house of the Lord was repaired in 830 BC under the direction of Joash King of Judah.  He performed that which he was minded to do.  Such is the case with each of us; we usually find a way to perform that which we are minded to do.

In football I primarily played defense.  I was a middle linebacker.  My coach told me that if an offensive player tried to block me, that I should place an open hand on his helmet and push his head sideways, away from my direction of progress.  The coach said that the body will always follow the head.  I do not know if this tactic is still legal today in football, or even if it was within the rules then, but I do know that it worked.  I learned to push the helmet of an opposing player and truly enough, their body would follow.

As I have studied the Bible and observed people, I have realized that this truth extends beyond the game of football.   It is very real in the game of life.  It seems that whatever a person is minded about today, they will be doing somewhere down the road.  That is unless they change their mind.  For where your mind is, your body follows.

James wrote: Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you… (James 4:8) This action of drawing near to God begins in the mind and it affects the body.  If any person is minded to be close to the Lord, they will be close to the Lord, and He will be close to them.  Think about this, “The Lord is as close to you as you desire for Him to be.”  I do not remember who I heard say this, it was a preacher, but it has always stuck with me.

King Joash was minded to repair the house of God.  What are you minded to do?

May the Lord bless and be pleased with your thought life today.

Dr. William Howe
