Minding Your Thoughts

A Biblical Overview of Obtaining and Maintaining a Biblical Thought Life

December 5

2 Samuel 18:27 And the watchman said, Me thinketh the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok. And the king said, He is a good man, and cometh with good tidings.

The Apostle Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 4:13, …I believed, and therefore have I spoken:… We speak of that which we think. The watchman thought that that the man he saw running was Ahimaaz, and he was. This man who was charged to stand sentinel in the watch tower was supposed to know whether those approaching the gate of the city were friends or foes. No doubt he had witnessed the movements of this man Ahimaaz before, this is why he could recognize him. All of his past observations of people coming close to the city gate allowed this watchman to form a conclusion and voice his opinion based on his thinking.

Proverbs 26:18 and 19 tells of a person called a “mad man”. This type of person casts …firebrands, arrows, and death toward others. This is done with words. They are likened to those who deceive their neighbor then, when it is found out, say, …Am not I in sport? Today it would be “just kidding.”  Sometimes the things people think they then say, and it causes great hurt to others. At times it is better not to speak that which you think, it is called discretion. Proverbs also describes a fool in various passages; Proverbs 29:11 states: A fool uttereth all his mind

Just because a person thinks something they do not always have to speak it. The watchman was right when he spoke his mind, and the situation was such that he should have spoken. Oftentimes however that which “me thinketh” would be better off left unspoken. Sometimes that which would be said would be like casting “firebrands, arrows and death,” and sometimes it could simply be incorrect. No one has to speak their mind all the time, but if responsibility calls for it, speak up loud and clear. Learn the difference between these two extremes and the mistakes made with the tongue will be greatly diminished, if not altogether eliminated.

May the Lord bless and be pleased with your thought life today.
