Minding Your Thoughts
A Biblical Overview of Obtaining and Maintaining a Biblical Thought Life
December 25
Jeremiah 23:17 They say still unto them that despise me, The LORD hath said, Ye shall have peace; and they say unto every one that walketh after the imagination of his own heart, No evil shall come upon you.
The Lord is speaking of false prophets. Notice what the Lord said in verse 16: Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the LORD. The phrase “vision of their own heart” is a great God given definition of imagination.
Ezekiel warned about false prophets. And her prophets have daubed them with untempered morter, seeing vanity, and divining lies unto them, saying, Thus saith the Lord GOD, when the LORD hath not spoken. (Ezekiel 22:28) Within Scripture God’s people are continually warned about false prophets. In the New Testament Paul dealt with this issue often. People speaking falsely for God, about God, or concerning God has been a problem since the Garden of Eden that continues today. There is only one antidote for false prophets and preachers, the Word of God.
Paul and Silas were in a city of Macedonia called Berea. There they preached and the people believed that which they preached. The citizens of Berea did not believe because of the personality, elegance, or oratory skill of the preachers. They believed because they …searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so (Acts 17:11). It is the responsibility of every believer to measure the message of any prophet or preacher by the authority of the Word of God.
The only way to protect your mind from the vain imaginations of others is to read, know, and study the Word of God. Hence the saying, “The Bible doesn’t need to be rewritten, the Bible needs to be reread.” Don’t know who said that first, but it sure is good.
May the Lord bless and be pleased with your thought life today.
