Minding Your Thoughts

A Biblical Overview of Obtaining and Maintaining a Biblical Thought Life

Jeremiah 9:14 But have walked after the imagination of their own heart, and after Baalim, which their fathers taught them:

Upon reading the verses surrounding today’s it is clear that no good comes to those who walk after the imagination of their own heart. However this is the climate in which we seem to live. People make outrageous and unprovable claims as authoritative and get mad, indignant, and overly offended if you do not agree with them. Today’s social climate is like “Do your own thing as long as you do it exactly like me.”

Nowhere is this more evident than religion. Any thought, belief, or conviction that a person has that is not in agreement with the Word of God is merely a figment of the imagination. Each and every one of us has a wonderful opportunity to choose that which we believe, that which affects our hearts, that which infects our thinking, and that which we build our lives upon. The choice is between two basic viewpoints:  that which the Word of God states, or that which men say.

Jeremiah spoke of man’s imagination eight times in the book that bears his name. Twice he mentioned it in his book of Lamentations. He discusses this aspect of man’s thinking more than any other writer. He also wrote The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? (Jeremiah 17:9)  [See tomorrow’s devotion for more on Jeremiah’s knowledge of this subject]

Is the path you are walking one of the imagination of your own heart, or of the Word of God? This is a question that can only be answered after truthful reflection and personal examination.

May the Lord bless and be pleased with your thought life today.
