Minding Your Thoughts

A Biblical Overview of Obtaining and Maintaining a Biblical Thought Life

Deuteronomy 29:19 And it come to pass, when he heareth the words of this curse, that he bless himself in his heart, saying, I shall have peace, though I walk in the imagination of mine heart, to add drunkenness to thirst:

The above verse is a portion of a sermon by Moses instructing the Hebrews about the Law of God. Evidently, there were those in the Old Testament times that had the same problem some face today. They walked in the imagination of their own heart rather than walking in agreement with God’s Word.

Believers today are instructed by God’s Word to be careful how they walk through life. Galatians 5:25 states: If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Christians today are to walk in the fullness of the Holy Spirit of God and not walk according to the flesh or the imagination of the heart. Ephesians 4:17–19 confirms this, This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.

The Lord God has always desired for His people to walk in agreement with Him. In the Garden of Eden God walked with Adam and Eve. Then their sin separated them, however, God found them, restored fellowship with them, and covered them. Yes, they forfeited the right to live in the garden, but they still had the ability to walk with God. The same is true with us today. He wants to walk with us, fellowship with us, and bless us. However, walking in the imagination of one’s heart causes us to forfeit that relationship. This is one reason why God included Ephesians 5:15 in our Bible: See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,  It seems clear enough that to walk wisely is to walk according to God’s plan and will, to walk foolishly could be classified as walking in the imagination of the heart.

May the Lord bless and be pleased with your thought life today.

Dr. William Howe
