Business by the Book

1 Corinthians 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

One of the impressive qualities of God that is that He will always …make a way… to do that which needs to be done. He is the originator of the “can do” attitude that all successful people possess. In today’s verse He promises to …make a way… for people to escape temptation, but throughout the whole Bible we read of Him making a way to accomplish His desired goal.

The ability to make a way to get things done is a combination of desire, planning, and performance. If a person really wants to get something done, they will find a way. One time, more than thirty years ago, I arranged a golf outing for a few men from our church. We had a great time of fellowship, a lot of laughs, and I witnessed one of the greatest golf shots of all time. I was able to take my twelve year old son on this trip and a fellow deacon took one of his sons as well. We were to play two rounds of golf so I gave these young boys a box of about 25 or 30 old golf balls. They played together, drove their own cart, and had quite a time. These two golf prodigies were playing just ahead of our foursome where we could keep an eye on them.

On the back nine of the second day we noticed that our boys were doing some strange driving of their golf cart. They were all over the course. Right, left, toward the green, back away from the green, their path or pattern had no rhyme or reason to it at all. When we finished I asked those two boys what they were doing. My son explained. They had lost all their golf balls except for one. They were embarrassed to come to us and ask for more and they didn’t want to quit the game. So, one of them would hit the ball. They would go mark the place where his ball was, then drive back to the tee and the other would hit the ball. Then they would mark it, go hit the other ball, then go back and the other boy would hit his ball. They did this for nine holes.

They found a way to play the game even though they didn’t have all that they needed to play the game properly. They had a desire, they had a plan, and they performed their plan. Both boys finished, but more than that, they both demonstrated that “can do” attitude that every father hopes their child possesses.

What task needs to be completed in your life? Develop a “can do” attitude and …make a way…  God does, boys who want to play a game did, and you can.
