Minding Your Thoughts
A Biblical Overview of Obtaining and Maintaining a Biblical Thought Life
2 Corinthians 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
The word “imaginations” as used here is defined as “a reckoning, computation, a reasoning: such as is hostile to the Christian faith, a judgment, decision” (Strongs). No one is immune to such imaginative thoughts. Sometimes reason outweighs Scripture. For example, Ecclesiastes says: Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days. (Ecclesiastes 11:1) According to all that has ever been learned about putting bread on water, it is known that the bread would dissolve. It would break down and become fish food. Furthermore, if the bread is upon the water for a short time and then retrieved, it would not be good for anything. It would not be good to eat, a person could not store it for future use, and it would not even be acceptable as an ingredient in a recipe. Bread that has been cast upon the waters is good for nothing. Yet, Scripture says we will find it after many days.
Of course this cannot be interpreted literally so it must be considered spiritually. Most often this teaching is related to financial offerings. But again, how can a person give and then receive that money back after many days? Once money is given it is no longer available to be used by the one giving it, right? But, God’s Word gives us a promise to consider. Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again. (Luke 6:38) This goes against all common sense, all human intellect, all natural reasoning, and every financial principle. Yet, it is true. God, supernaturally, spiritually, and stealthily gives back to those that give, and He gives back in like measure.
It is likely that the imagination will fight this truth. When this happens it is the time to employ today’s teaching of Casting down imaginations. The imagination is given to man as a gift of God, but when it contradicts God’s clear teachings a choice must be made: “Which will dictate what to believe and do; imagination or the Word of God?” Those who choose to believe God’s teachings will cast down those imaginations and submit to His Word.
May the Lord bless and be pleased with your thought life today.
