Business by the Book

Proverbs 11:14 Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.

The wisdom of having multiple counsellors is legendary. The more important the decision the more need for suitable counsellors, but before seeking advice from anyone consider some time worn characteristics of effective counsellors.

1.          Can they maintain confidentiality?

2.         In the area of concern, are they knowledgeable, or trained?

3.         Have they demonstrated wisdom in their own affairs?

4.         How long have you known them?

5.         Do they themselves seek out counsellors when needed?

6.         Will they tell you the truth or seek to comfort or impress you?

7.         Would you send your son or daughter to them for advice?

8.         When faced with an enemy how do they treat them?

9.         If you choose not to take their advice how will they react?

10.       Are they stable or continually given to change?

Remember the word “multitude.”   “In the multitude of counsellors there is safety” take the time to seek out wise counsel. You will know when enough is enough. It is seldom that anyone complains of seeking out too much advice. The more complicated the matter, the higher quantity of counsellors needed.
