Business by the Book

Proverbs 9:8  Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.

One of the attributes that every successful person needs to develop is the ability to read people. The old adage, “Don’t judge a book by its cover” is true indeed, but the book can be judged if it is read. While judging others is a dangerous flaw and a slippery slope, in business others must be judged concerning their ability, skill, character and other work related characteristics. This type of judging is only possible by being able to read people.

There are many ways to evaluate, or judge people. One is found in our verse today. Watch people as they are reproved or rebuked, their reaction will speak volumes about their character. A scorner will respond with hate, vitriol, moodiness, bitterness, sarcasm, and the like. A wise person will embrace the one instructing them, even to the point of loving them.

The next time a pinpoint evaluation is needed of a person, read their reactions to reproof and rebuke. This will allow you to know if they are a scorner, or wise. And, if you desire to be wise, take rebuke and learn to love it. After all Proverbs 6:23 reminds, …reproofs of instruction are the way of life. No one is ever so wise that they are absolved from the need of reproof and rebuke; these are the way of life.
